Mary Ann Ashley’s public service background includes serving two terms as an elected school board member, including vice president, two terms as an elected Canton Village Trustee, and one term as Canton Mayor. She is currently serving her first term as Canton Town Supervisor.
For close to 35 years, her professional background included being a NYSARC Case Manager, Canton Youth Center Director, County Youth Bureau Director, and school counselor.
Mary Ann earned a SUNY Canton associates degree in criminal justice, a SUNY Plattsburgh bachelor’s degree in human services, a St. Lawrence University master’s degree in education, a New York State certification as a school counselor through St. Lawrence University, and a school administrator certification through SUNY Plattsburgh.
“In my elected public service positions I have gotten things done using a team-based, shared decision-making, comprehensive-planning model that emphasizes setting goals and achieving benchmarks,” says Ashley. “For the past three years the Canton Town Board has engaged these strategies and has been results driven. We have accomplished a great deal with the priority being making the town financially sustainable. The evidence is clear, we turned things around by focusing on the people.”
Mary Ann was born and raised in Ogdensburg. Canton has been her hometown for 37 years and she has been actively involved in school parent groups working for the benefit of all children, including her child Tyler. Mary Ann was active in the St. Lawrence Lewis BOCES Teachers Association including serving two years as Co-President and being part of successful fair labor contract negotiations with the district.
She is a member of the Canton Community Fund Board of Directors.
